Lowe Center Services
Number Served in 2005 There are a total of 46 individuals with mental retardation receiving services through the Adult Day Services program at the Lowe Center. Services Provided The Lowe Center offers community-based educational, vocational, adaptive daily living skills training, and support to adults with mental retardation. Specific training areas include pre-vocational, domestic, independent living, academics, communication, and self-care skills. Therapy services provided at the Lowe Center include physical, occupational, nutritional, and speech. Additional therapy sessions, such as individual counseling, are coordinated with local agencies to provide on-site evaluations for individuals as well as training for staff. Consumer Satisfaction Results A total of 37 consumer satisfaction surveys have been mailed, with 19 having been returned to date. The results of the surveys received indicate the following:

Accomplishments for the Year One individual moved to the McKemy Center due to her improved pre-vocational skills. Another individual began supported employment at Outback Steakhouse. Eight individuals, on a rotating basis, began going to the gym at Max Luther Community Center on a weekly basis. Eight to ten individuals, on a rotating basis, began going to the Art Museum on a monthly basis. The amount of contract work performed daily at the Lowe Center increased drastically – the individuals package clips and screws, drug test kits, and work in Recycling on a daily basis. Three individuals assisted staff with putting up a scarecrow at the Botanical Gardens. One classroom assisted staff in painting a rocket for First American Bank as part of Huntsville’s Bicentennial Celebration. Twelve individuals save coupons and magazines and deliver them to residents of Summit Towers and Johnson Towers. Ten individuals participate quarterly in a gardening project with a volunteer from the Botanical Gardens. Eight individuals began going to the library monthly to check out books on tape. Individuals collected and delivered donations for hurricane relief. Many individuals joined a new service organization, the Friendship Civitan Club, which meets two times a month at the Lowe Center.
